And I managed to remember my password. If you want to find me on Facebook where I live most of the time, it's Sheryl Zedler Roberts.

What have I been up to? Well, I almost died literally, in late January/early February because no one found the right lower lobe pneumonia, which precipitated a whole lot of fun like inflammation of the lung lining, and some pretty incredible feet swelling. Eventually I found out that I had no working veins in my lower legs and some time down the road I'll have to have surgery to fix it, oh yay. NOT. In meantime, I get to wear sexy old support hose when I am out of bed.

However, the very best news in the world, on March 8th, 3 weeks early, my daughter Sidra presented me with the most beautiful little boy in the galaxy. She and her husband Zack named him Nathan, for Nathan Brazil, a character created by the late great Jack Chalker in the Wellworld series. Considering Sidra's middle name is Maureen from the character in Robert Heinlein's Time Enough for Love and Sidra means "From the stars" or "Starlight", the SF theme of naming children continues. He's a great pleasant baby who actually sleeps, unlike his mother. However, he does hold his breath and squeal when he's really mad, which is exactly like his mother. Except Nathan only does it once, and Sidra did it several times in a row. I am enjoying him so much. I waited almost 8 years for him and I am so very happy.

I have been so friggin' busy i never post. I will do better, I promise, but I am working on a work project that I expect to have first author on in some journal or other eventually. In the meantime, I give you one of the funniest parodies I have seen in a long time. I didn't know the actress from Chuck had it in her, but she does a bang up job. So enjoy!

Much to my disappointment, it looks like I am going to be working tonight. Never mind that I have already worked my required hours, and have requested to be let off. I have a distinct impression that I am going to be screwed over royal tonight. So, being the professional that I am, I am going to just suck it up and deal with it. I knew the job sucked when I took it.

So Happy New Years to you all! Your night should be 800% better than the one I will be experiencing. My New Year's Resolution, which I rarely make, is that I am not going to let my hospital screw me over this year. So there!

No one should allow me to watch late night TV commercials. Last night I was flipping through the channels when I  hit this informercial selling an overpriced knock off of Princess Diana's engagement ring  that Prince William gave to Kate Middleton as an engagement ring. My first thought, upon looking at that ring, was "Gee, that would match perfectly that over priced knock off piece that they sold 15 years ago from the film Titanic. You know, that heart shaped "blue diamond" encrusted with diamonds around it, called heart of the sea or heart of the ocean or some such nonsense. They sold like hotcakes and I am sure there are a zillion floating around. Well, the whole idea just hit me funny. I laughed and laughed and laughed at the silliness of our consumer culture.

Maybe it's just me:)

To those who celebrate, but I hope all of you have Happy Holidays. I have to work 12 hours tonight, but I couldn't go to bed without telling all of you how much I appreciate you, even if I haven't posted a lot lately. I hoping to remedy that soon. Love you all!

The past few weeks have been frantic. I made a silent promise to myself that I would get Zack's stocking finished this year. Some years ago, he was admiring the handmade stockings I had made for grammarcommie  and ezr07  when they were little and I asked him if he would like one, too. Well, of course he would, so I looked online and found a stocking featuring tuxedo cats. Zack loves black and white cats, so hot damn, I thought I was in business! I ordered it, I thought it was rather pricey but I didn't let that deter me. The kit arrived, with directions in French plus it had the most complex cross stitching color palette I had ever seen. I knew I was screwed, but I started work on it anyway.

Then my mother died, and I am sure you all are too familiar with all that family dramarama, some of which was my fault, but not all of it, by any means. So, I wasn't real inclined to work on that stocking for awhile. Things eventually got better, so I industriously worked to get it finished this Christmas. I finished it this week.

So what am I doing up at 6am on Christmas Eve? I'm baking beans because Christmas Eve beans are a tradition in my family and I was worried they won't cook if I don't start them early. Never mind that Sidra and Zack are visiting his folks up in Fort Worth this Christmas, and let's just ignore the fact that I'm the only one here that will eat them, I decided yesterday that it wouldn't be friggin' Christmas without those beans. It's not my mother's recipe, it's a recipe I found for baked beans in a cookbook, but the thought is there. I'll probably freeze what I don't eat and share it with Sidra and Zack when they get back.

I have to work 7pm-7am on Christmas Day and Elaine is scheduled to work 9am-4:30pm at her work, so it's going to be a bizarre Christmas anyway. I'm cooking the stuffing today so I don't have a lot of cooking to do tomorrow.

Cause Hannukah was early this year. Yes, you may be getting them late, and I'm sorry. Work and being on a criminal jury has kinda thrown off my usual card sending. (We sent a crack dealer to the Big House.)  Not to mention I hate my left leg. This week it's tendonitis, rather than the nerve thing.

Anyway, if you have moved since last year and you would like a card, the comments will be screened. I shall be industriously addressing cards for the next two days.

I have been quiet lately, for good reason. I HATE to hear anyone whine on and on and on about various health issues. Those will serious valid problems, I don't mine. But I despise whiney behavior in me. Waaah I have pain, waaah my leg hurts, waaah, my life SUXS.

So I have spared you all. After much testing, I have a L4-L5 radiculopathy, which is a fancy way to so say an inflamed nerve root. It waa better last week. The last 2 days the pain is back, but not as bad as before. I shall see if I survive tonight ok and take it from there. This is an apparent long term problem right now, so I am hoping to get ride of it soon.

There are upheavals at work, but I hope they don't throw me out on my ear. I guess I'll find out tonight.

I had a great birthday and a nice dinner paid for by my son in laws. I replaid him by making German food and holding  his party, sans Sidra, who was busy going something in a refinery in Paul's Valley. Wednesday night is Paul's dinner and party. The Birthday Corridor O' Doom is upon up.

I keep reading folks, I love you all. Some times I don't have time to comment. Wanted to let you know that I think I am on the mend.

Oh, and I have kittens, oh so CUTE kittens. Meet my fine set of tomcats. Have station wagon, I will travel. Ask your friends, neighbors, family and coworkers. I have to find some one close to take them. I have been instructed by my neuro guy not to drive "TOO FAR" To me, that means don't drive to Alaska. Please share this around, because I NEED to find these guys home soon. I would hate to have to take them to the SPCA and have them put to sleep. So ask your friends online, repost in your journal, link to this post. I really need help here.

Kittens!,Nature Discovery So please, let me know. Also you can ooh and ahh over my kittens if you want to without me trying to foist them off on you.

16 August 2010 @ 03:23 pm

I managed to reinjure my ankle at work (thanks to some incredibly bad staffing by a relatively new charge nurse)  and spent the next week and a half in bed. I mean, no internet, reading books in bed. The middle of last week I finally drug myself to work, but have rested otherwise.

That's the downside of this tendonitis. Here's the upside:

Since I can't go out and birdwatch, I have been carefully observing birds on the way home from work in the mornings. On one of those drives, I spotted a huge nest on the electrical scaffolding beside the railroad tracks. Paul and I went to investigate the nest this past weekend. We finally found the lengendary Bellaire Quaker Parakeets. Quakers, known also as Monk Parakeets, are native to South America, but are quite numerous here in the US. Some states have made owning them illegal, because of the threat to crops that they represent. However, they are legal here in Texas and I have friends who own them...they are cute, funny birds. So, here's a photo of one by it's nest.
